Invasive Species Removal

BC Parks, UVic Ecological Restoration students and Stqeeye’ staff and volunteers are undertaking a day long Invasive Species removal event near Grandmother’s Garden just below the barns. Please join our invasive species removal volunteer list and come out and bash some broom. BC Parks and ERC members will be focusing on broom below Grandmother’s garden, and removing it in a dumpster. Stqeeye’ volunteers can help by focusing on young English hawthorn sprouts all around Grandmother’s garden. Please email Restoration Coordinator Rachel to be added to our sign up list.

A Biochar demonstration is tentatively planned for the following week, lead by Salt Spring Farmland Trust volunteers. With the right weather conditions, participants will be able to watch a working Biochar kiln and hear the benefits and steps to doing your own Biochar work at home. Invasive species will be burned and added to hot composters at Grandmother’s garden to promote water retention and good bacterial processes. Interested persons are asked to watch for time and date updates on this website.
